Understanding a new ovarian cancer diagnosis

Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer in the U.S., and because symptoms can be vague and there is no effective routine screening, many cases are found at a later stage. While this may seem overwhelming, understanding your diagnosis is an important first step. There are treatment options, resources, and a caring community ready to support you as you navigate this journey with knowledge and hope.

Ovarian cancer treatment options

An important step in managing your new diagnosis of ovarian cancer is learning about treatment options. Taking notes, asking questions, and bringing a trusted friend or family member to appointments can help you navigate the process with confidence.

  • Surgery – Surgery is often the first step in treatment and may involve removing one or both ovaries, fallopian tubes, the uterus, and any visible cancer.
  • Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to kill cancer cells and is commonly given after surgery.
  • Targeted therapies – Targeted therapies are designed to attack specific characteristics of cancer cells and may be used alone or with other treatments.
  • Other treatments – Other treatment options may be used in certain cases depending on the type and stage of ovarian cancer.
  • Clinical trials – Clinical trials offer access to promising new treatments and are an important option to consider.

Your healthcare team will work with you to determine the best approach based on your specific diagnosis and needs.
