At the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, our strength comes from the stories of the people whose lives have been touched by ovarian cancer. Today, we are proud to introduce Suzen Stewart as our new Board Chair. Suzen’s journey began as a sister, caregiver, and advocate, shaped by her personal experiences supporting two sisters through ovarian cancer. She takes the helm following Dr. Meredith Mitstifer, whose dedication and leadership left a lasting mark on our community. You can read more about Meredith’s story here.
Through Suzen’s story, we see the resilience, hope, and compassion that drive our mission. Her experiences remind us that support and connection can transform the ovarian cancer journey—not just for patients, but for the families who love and care for them.

A family touched by ovarian cancer
Suzen’s first encounter with ovarian cancer came when her sister Jean was diagnosed in 2016.
“I had never heard of ovarian cancer before my sister Jean’s diagnosis. When she told me, I began researching, consuming as much knowledge as I could to prepare myself to be in the best position possible to help her,” Suzen shared.
The emotional impact was profound.
Suzen recalls, “The loss of control meant she had a stronger desire to control what she could. In hindsight, I realize I was doing the same. I wanted to make memories and enjoy what we could together because time with her was not a guarantee.”
After Jean passed, Suzen found comfort and guidance in a quote she discovered on Jean’s phone: “The bad news is time flies, the good news is you’re the pilot.” This mantra now guides how she lives her life, cherishing each moment and making meaningful memories.
Earlier this year, Suzen’s younger sister Christine received an early-stage ovarian cancer diagnosis.
“NOCC was a lifeline and I sought resources for my sister and myself,” Suzen said.
Christine is now post-treatment and shows no evidence of disease.

Lessons from caregiving
Caregiving brought challenges that Suzen had never anticipated.
“As a caregiver, I just wanted to help. I didn’t always know what to do, but I felt I needed to be doing something. What I didn’t realize until much later was that we all need care and support. Sometimes this means taking time for yourself to fuel your own soul,” she reflected.
She found NOCC programs, like the Animated Patient Guide and Questions to Ask Your Doctor, invaluable during both her sisters’ journeys. Local programs and peer support groups reminded her that no one has to face ovarian cancer alone and that shared experiences can bring strength and comfort.
“Being with other caregivers and survivors is like fuel for the soul,” she explained.

Ovarian cancer caregiver support
The role of an ovarian cancer caregiver can be both meaningful and challenging. Whether you’re navigating a new diagnosis, treatment decisions, or the emotional toll of caregiving, you are not alone.
Advocating for awareness and mental health
Suzen stresses that education and awareness are critical.
“Symptoms are often vague and misdiagnosed, and too many patients are not heard or taken seriously until the disease has progressed. We need better education for healthcare providers, more open conversations in communities, and widespread advocacy,” she said.
Mental health is also a priority.
“Depression, anxiety, grief, and feelings of isolation are common and deserve the same level of care and attention as the physical aspects of the disease. Psychological support, counseling, and community connection must be integrated into treatment plans from diagnosis through survivorship or end-of-life care.”
Through her time as a board member, Suzen gained insight into NOCC’s programs and the importance of strategic planning. She now brings that vision to her role as Board Chair, supporting initiatives that connect patients and caregivers to the resources they need.

Leading NOCC as Board Chair
As Board Chair, Suzen is focused on building on the work of her predecessors while expanding access and support.
“With Meredith’s guidance, our board has seen change and Melissa’s leadership has resulted in tremendous growth for the organization. I believe we have a dedicated board that will work together to continue on this trajectory,” she shared.
She is particularly excited about initiatives that make connection and resources more accessible.
“The new case management system will ensure patients are connected to all the resources and tools possible. I am also excited about the new podcasts, which are an excellent way to share expertise, experiences, and stories. Patients and caregivers could listen together on a drive to or from treatment, at treatment, or while enjoying some sunshine,” Suzen said.
Suzen’s vision emphasizes awareness, mental health, and community connection. Her leadership reflects collaboration, empathy, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact for survivors and caregivers across the country.
