Understanding an ovarian cancer recurrence

Ovarian cancer recurrence happens when cancer returns after initial treatment. While this can be discouraging, it’s important to remember that treatment options continue to advance, and many live well beyond recurrence with the right support and care.

Ovarian cancer recurrence treatment options

A recurrence means revisiting your treatment plan, which may include therapies you’ve had before or new advancements in care. Your healthcare team will work with you to determine the best approach based on your individual diagnosis and needs.

  • Surgery – Surgery is often the first step in treatment and may involve removing one or both ovaries, fallopian tubes, the uterus, and any visible cancer.
  • Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to kill cancer cells and is commonly given after surgery.
  • Targeted therapies – Targeted therapies are designed to attack specific characteristics of cancer cells and may be used alone or with other treatments.
  • Other treatments – Other treatment options may be used in certain cases depending on the type and stage of ovarian cancer.
  • Clinical trials – Clinical trials offer access to promising new treatments and are an important option to consider.

Your healthcare team will work with you to determine the best approach based on your specific diagnosis and needs.
