Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer 2010 Campaign To Kick Off In Chicago
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) today announced its 2010 “Walks to Break the Silence On Ovarian Cancer” schedule. The Walks will be held in more than 20 communities across the U.S.
The 2010 season will kick off May 1 in Chicago, followed by walks in Reston, Va. (May 8) and Des Moines, IA (May 8). Most of the remaining Walks will be held in September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month.
“We are thrilled to launch the 2010 Walks season,” said David Barley, NOCC’s Chief Executive Officer. “Last year alone, despite the challenging economy, more than 25,000 participants helped raise over $1.5 million. We expect to welcome even more participants than last year, which means that more people will become informed about ovarian cancer. “ Funds from the Walks go toward education and awareness programs nationwide and “we hope that leads to more cases of early detection and more lives saved,” Barley said.
Depending on the Chapter, some of the Walks are non-competitive and for all fitness levels, while others are competitive Walk/Run events. In addition to raising awareness, the Walks celebrate ovarian cancer survivors and honor those who have lost their lives to the disease. Walkers are invited to walk “in honor of” or “in memory of” a friend or family member. Some Walks display a “Wall of Courage,” where family and friends post photos and notes to remember their loved ones.
Following each Walk, all participants receive a T-shirt and a gift pack from Pureology, the National Sponsor of the events. Several Walks also provide a “Survivor’s Tent” with food and gifts for ovarian cancer survivors.

NOCC is a nonprofit founded in 1995 that is committed to improving the survival rate and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer. More than 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in their later stages when the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. That is why the NOCC stresses that the early signs and symptoms of the disease must be recognized, not only by women, but also by their families and the medical community.
